This pharmacoresistant disease leads to severe disability due to progressive loss of movement, dysarthria, dysphagia, and pain. Deep brain stimulation DBS in the globus pallidus interna GPi is a safe and effective treatment with positive long-term clinical outcome.
Various studies showed not only high functional improvement but also positive influence on quality of life, cognitive functioning, and mood. Maximum improvement was achieved after 6 months from the start of stimulation which resulted in maj or improvement in mobility and overall quality of life which sustained for 18 months of follow-up.
